Wild Atlantic Seagarden is working with the Marine Institute of Ireland to introduce marine studies into the national curriculum for young people of Ireland. Seaweed has enormous economic potential for Ireland. Through good scientific study we hope to influence policy and get bio-marine subjects introduced into the school syllabus to prepare young people to go into further education and industry.
The programme will raise awareness in young people of the political issues which will affect their futures directly, such as access of local people to their environmental resources and global environmental policy affecting the oceans and how important it is to take care of them.
We are developing educational materials and researching current levels of interest in the development of products from seaweed based materials. We are running education pilots in national schools and in secondary schools with Transition Year students. We are working with international partners to reproduce the study in Europe and beyond.
The most important thing we can do now is to give young people the skills and information they will need to take care of their futures. If you are a student, teacher or parent interested in this programme, please use our contact form to let us know.
